BRAVIS desktop video conferences - support - FAQ

Here you will find answers about the frequently-asked questions about the topic: Network

topWhat ports need to be activated to use BRAVIS?

The following ports must be accessible in order to use BRAVIS:

  • On the computer on which BRAVIS is running, the DNS service must be activated with the port 53/TCP+UDP in order to be able to convert host names into IP addresses. This is usually set by default.
  • For product activation and license checking (does not affect the Pico edition), connections via port 443/TCP (HTTPS) to dongle.bravis.de are required.
  • For the software's update check, a connection via port 80/TCP (HTTP) to support.bravis.de is required. However, the update check is optional and does not affect the basic functioning of the program.
  • For the references to the manual and the support pages on the BRAVIS servers, an installed standard browser with Web access to the domains bravis.de and bravis.eu is assumed.
  • To determine your public IP address, connections from port 3478/UDP to external STUN servers are required.
  • In order to be able to invite other participants via the BRAVIS contact address (or other SIP address) or in order to be accessible via the BRAVIS contact address (or another SIP address), connections from port 5060/UDP to sip.bravis.vc or other external SIP servers are required.
  • From the BRAVIS port (default is 5530/UDP) of any PC on the internal LAN, queries to any UDP port on the public network are possible and subsequent incoming response packets to these outgoing queries are accepted on the sending port.
  • The BRAVIS software must be added to the rules of the Windows-internal firewall for unlimited access and it may not be blocked by a personal firewall. It is possible that these must be configured in advance with administrator rights.

topDoes BRAVIS support the configuration of a HTTP/HTTPS proxy?

Yes, BRAVIS supports the configuration of HTTP/HTTPS proxies. For this, you must enter the IP address and port of the proxy in Options --> Network --> Proxy. You can configure separate proxies for HTTP and HTTPS or, by placing a checkmark next to "Use this proxy server for all protocols," you can use the entry for the HTTP proxies for HTTPS too.

topCan the BRAVIS communication port be changed?

Yes, you can change the BRAVIS communication port (default 5530/UDP) yourself. This may be necessary if you are already using the port for another application or another service. You can change the BRAVIS communication port under Options --> Network --> Advanced. Here you can set a fixed port or give BRAVIS the opportunity to choose a random port. This random port will be selected anew with each program start. Please note that you cannot use the setting "Use a random port" if your router uses a sym. NAT and you have configured port forwarding.

topWhat additional ports must be configured for NAT routers?

If you use a NAT router, it must be configured so that

  • From the BRAVIS port (default is 5530/UDP) of each PC on the internal LAN, queries are possible to each UDP port on the public network and
  • Incoming response packets to these outgoing queries are accepted on the sending port.
If your router uses a sym. NAT, you must also set up port forwarding. For this, your BRAVIS communication port (default is 5530/UDP) must be set to forward to the corresponding local IP address of your PC. Please use your router manufacturer’s manual to configure the port forwarding. If you are using several BRAVIS PCs behind a sym. NAT, each of these PCs must be assigned its own BRAVIS communication port.

topI can't reach other participants. If somebody invites me and I accept the invitation, no conference takes place. My public port is always 1 higher than the local port.

Check your network interface. Are you logged onto the same router with several network cards (e.g. WLAN, normal LAN) at the same time? If so, switch one of the interfaces off.

topI have activated the UDP ports 3478, 5060, and 5530 in my router and also in the firewall rules. Nevertheless, I cannot connect to BRAVIS computers on the Internet. On the local network, invitations via the IP address work without a flaw. What can I do?

Please check whether you have allowed DNS resolution for BRAVIS. BRAVIS needs DNS in order to be able to convert computer names into IP addresses.

topThe test program has determined that I have a symmetrical NAT; I cannot also be invited to conferences with SIP. How can I participate in conferences with BRAVIS nevertheless?

If you have a router, a fritzbox or something similar, you can often make settings for the device via a Web connection. Please set up a static route to your computer (local IP, BRAVIS_PORT [default is 5530]), protocol UDP). This setting can also be found under the term port forwarding.

topI see the message "The public IP could not be determined."

Several solutions are possible.

  • Personal Firewalls: Please allow outgoing and incoming traffic for the BRAVIS application. On program start, a connection is also made to STUN servers and SIP servers in order to be accessible on the Internet.
  • NAT-box/DSL router with firewall: Please activate outgoing UDP traffic in your firewall and in NAT routers so that BRAVIS can connect to address servers and other clients. Incoming responses should in most cases be allowed automatically. It is possible that incoming UDP traffic must also be activated on the public BRAVIS port.
  • Company/organization firewall: Universities and companies often have firewalls in their gateways that prevent an unhindered flow of communication for security reasons. Apply for an activation of the services STUN (UDP port 3478), SIP (UDP port 5060), and BRAVIS (usually UDP port 5530 if this port was publicly available for the communication partner; otherwise, use other ports if necessary).

topHow can I determine the bandwidth of my Internet access?

If you do not know your Internet bandwidth, you can usually find this in your contract data or on your last invoice. Otherwise, please contact your Internet provider.

Alternatively, you can query the bandwidth available to you via the following URL:

www.wieistmeineip.de

Please enter the value specified there on the BRAVIS network dialog.

topI have a Netgear Router WGR614 and can not perform a testcall (error code 408, 473 or 477)

Some firmware versions of Netgear WGR614 possibly need to have the SPI router firewall deactivated. Activate the checkbox in menu ‘Advanced --> WAN configuration --> Deactivate SPI Firwall’ and apply this adjustment.

you possess a Netgear router named WGR614V9 we suggest you to use an alternative device. The WGR614V9 modifies the data packets and makes communication with BRAVIS impossible.
